China debt dogs Maldives’ ‘bridge to prosperity’

For years Aminat Waheeda drove her taxi along the narrow lanes and congested roads of the Maldives capital looking for passengers. The most lucrative fares – airport arrivals – were out of reach.

The airport serving Male is on a different island and a speedboat was needed to get between the two.

In 2018, that all changed, as did Ms Waheeda’s life. And the single mother of two teenagers has China to thank.

A 2.1km (1.3-mile), four-lane bridge built with $200m (£148m) from Beijing means Male’s taxi drivers can now pick up passengers right from the airport entrance.

“After the bridge was built, transportation got easy for everyone,” she says. “[It] has helped taxi drivers like me to earn more money.”

In fact, her income doubled.

A Samaritan, a student and a pantomime producer are just three of the contestants hoping to win this year’s Great British Bake Off.

The show will return to Channel 4 on 22 September after filming was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s line-up consists of 12 contestants – one fewer than the baker’s dozen who competed last year.

Matt Lucas will replace Sandi Toksvig as host, joining the returning Noel Fielding.

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith will be on hand to judge the best bakes in the famous white tent.

The bakers were selected by April, but coronavirus restrictions meant the filming schedule had to be rewritten, and the series will reach screens a month later than usual.

The show is normally filmed over three months, largely at weekends. However, this year the producers asked the contestants to take six

Trump Accuses Judge of ‘Stacking the Deck’ Against Him in Tax Ruling

President Donald Trump’s lawyers on Friday accused a federal judge of “stacking the deck” against Trump in his long-running fight to block the Manhattan district attorney from getting his tax returns.

The assertion came in a legal filing in which Trump’s lawyers asked a federal appeals court to scrap a lower court’s decision that would allow the district attorney to obtain the returns and other financial records.

In a forceful and sharply worded brief, Trump’s lawyers said the judge, Victor Marrero of U.S. District Court in Manhattan, had given short shrift to their arguments that a subpoena seeking the tax returns was overly broad and amounted to political harassment.

The appeal was the latest turn in a protracted legal battle that began in August 2019, when the office of the district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., a Democrat, issued the subpoena to Trump’s accounting firm seeking eight years of the
