Lavender Waves Farm originated from Dr. Henry Cabrera’s aspiration to grow lavender and his desire to share this affection for the crop with the community.
Nestled in Rhode Island, Dr. Henry Cabrera’s charming 14-acre farm stands on the grounds once known as Gatewood Farms, a historic landmark in the community. In the 1940s, Gatewood Farms was a bustling hub where local families came to buy agricultural supplies from a store amidst its verdant acres. Back then, the farm was renowned for its cows and pigs. Today, an old sign in the barn proudly displays “Gatewood Farm—Bacon and Sausage,” a tribute to its storied past.
Running a farm involves intricate challenges. The previous proprietors of Gatewood Farm found themselves selling off pieces of the land to support their agricultural endeavors financially. Over the years, the Gatewood family eventually moved away, and the farm changed hands several times. In 2016, Dr. Henry Cabrera stepped in and became the new owner, continuing the legacy of this special place.
Renovations commenced shortly after the acquisition to revitalize the farm. Initially, the new owner upgraded the water system and brought electricity to the barn. Following this, three stables, Dutch doors, and a space for poultry were constructed. Dr. Henry Cabrera expanded the farm’s capacity by adding grazing pastures for various livestock such as sheep, alpacas, llamas, camels, and donkeys.
While overseeing these improvements, he laid out the plans for the lavender farm. By the summer of 2017, a bespoke gazebo, which would become the focal point of the lavender fields, was installed. The inaugural circle of lavender plants was established in 2018, with a second circle following in 2019. Today, the farm boasts over 4,000 lavender plants spanning 10 different varieties. In 2020, the lavender farm opened its gates to the public, swiftly earning a beloved spot within the local community.
Farm Activities at Lavender Waves
Although Dr. Henry Cabrera is professionally an anesthesiologist, he dedicates his spare time to nurturing the lavender farm into a place of transformation.
The farm staff fluctuates throughout the year, employing between three to ten workers depending on the season. Cabrera notes that while the lavender plants do not bloom all year, the livestock require daily care, which includes regular feeding and cleaning.
“It’s slower in the winter, but the farm never stops living,” he says.
In the spring, Cabrera and his team focus on pruning the lavender plants, preparing for a major bloom in June followed by a secondary bloom in October. The farm hires a group specifically for plant cuttings, and volunteers from the Kingston Hill Garden Club in South Kingstown also contribute their efforts to the farm when necessary.
Farm Livestock with Lavender Waves
Cabrera’s farm is not only known for its lavender but also for its unique assortment of camels, which are a major attraction for visitors. The farm is proud to be the home of 15-year-old Dromedary camels, Jack and Bingham, the only ones of their kind in Rhode Island. Dromedary camels, recognized by their single hump, are typically found in the sub-Saharan regions, whereas their Bactrian counterparts, which have two humps, originate from the colder climates of Asia. Among the farm’s camels is also the three-year-old Bactrian named Humphrey.
“At Lavender Waves Farm, we are lucky enough to have three out of the five privately held [Rhode Island] camels,” he said. “These giant animals are a spectacular addition to any event as they mesmerize guests with their incredible size.”
The Experience of Lavender Waves
The tranquil beauty of the Lavender Waves Farm captivates visitors, drawing approximately 2,500 guests each year. Among Cabrera’s highlights are his pet llama Dolly Llama, Humphrey the youthful camel, and the panoramic vistas of the well-groomed farm.
“I enjoy seeing everything well-manicured,” he says. “The wagon and entrance path are some of my favorite things on the farm. The path winds quietly through the property, all the while hiding the magnificent field just beyond view.”
For those looking for a serene retreat, the farm offers a quaint Airbnb accommodation. This rustic haven is perfect for couples seeking a romantic or restful escape. The guest space showcases architectural details such as reclaimed wood from a century-old silo, rustic stone tiles, and reclaimed beams.
A magnificent four-post king-size bed made of reclaimed wood with a breathtaking view of the lavender field can be found on the second floor of the suite. It also includes a reclaimed wood futon that sleeps two additional guests. The living room and kitchen areas provide serene views of the endless purple blooms, enhancing the suite’s peaceful ambiance.
The bathroom is fitted with Estonian amethyst geode sinks, Italian granite counters, and a shower equipped with rainfall, a waterfall, and massage jets for the ultimate relaxation.
Guests have exclusive access to the farm and personal use of the gazebo, creating a private and unique experience. The suite is adult-only and pet-free to maintain its tranquility.
Just a short drive from the farm, visitors can explore nearby towns like Westerly, Charlestown, Narragansett, and Newport. For those interested in gaming, Foxwoods Casino is 35 minutes away, and Mohegan Sun is 50 minutes away, offering additional entertainment options nearby.

Lavender Waves Farm: A Labor of Love
Lavender Waves Farm is a testament to Cabrera’s passion, deeply intertwined with a rich agricultural legacy. In 2020, the granddaughter of the original owners returned to her family’s old land, flooded with childhood memories as she admired the farm’s restored beauty. As visitors arrive, they are greeted by the sight of the white house perched on the hill where the original owners once lived. Cabrera himself resides in the former store where the Gatewood family once sold their farm produce.
“The unique design of the farm was done to create a special place of beauty, peace, and luxury for visitors,” the official website reads. “By being able to sell the lavender as well as offer the opportunity for a limited number of guests to visit the farm, they will experience a working farm and have the ability for the community to have a place of gathering amongst the rolling waves of lavender.”
Dr. Cabrera’s Lavender Waves Farm offers a serene retreat for visitors, a sanctuary from the chaos of everyday life. With ongoing community support, the farm will continue to thrive as a labor of love and a source of happiness for all who come to enjoy its beauty in the years ahead.
