Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law facing lawsuit claiming it ‘attacks’ family

A team of Florida people represented by the Southern Poverty Regulation Middle, Lambda Legal, Southern Authorized Counsel, and personal counsel Baker McKenzie submitted a lawsuit to block the Parental Rights in Education invoice. 

The bill, which bans conversations of sexuality and gender identity in kindergarten by way of 3rd quality, has been labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by critics.

The lawsuit argues the invoice properly silences LGBTQ+ college students and family members. 

“Plaintiffs Jen and Matt Cousins want their kids, which include their non- binary seventh grader Plaintiff S.C., to come to feel protected and supported at faculty. HB 1557 attacks not only S.C. but the total Cousins family members,” the lawsuit reads.

“This legislation will stop our two youngest small children, soaring first and 3rd graders, from talking about their more mature non-binary sibling in the classroom for worry of their teacher or their faculty receiving in issues,” plaintiffs Jennifer and Matthew Cousins stated. “The law also robs them of the opportunity of talking about their spouse and children like other non-LGBTQ+ little ones. It is heartbreaking to know that my little ones might be bullied mainly because this legislation paints our relatives as shameful. Every child deserves the suitable to celebrate their family members in the type that it exists.”

LGBT groups Equality Florida and Relatives Equality have also sued, arguing the regulation violates the constitutionally shielded rights of totally free speech, equivalent protection and due course of action of college students and households.

DESANTIS Signals Invoice STRIPPING DISNEY OF SELF GOVERNING Position

President Biden also took sides, calling the mother and father invoice “hateful” in a tweet.

“I want each member of the LGBTQI+ community — specifically the young children who will be impacted by this hateful monthly bill — to know that you are liked and accepted just as you are,” he wrote in February. “I have your back again, and my Administration will go on to fight for the protections and basic safety you ought to have.”

DeSantis has defended the legislation in push conferences, hitting again at regional reporters who have applied the “Really don’t Say Homosexual” label in their queries.

“Does it say that in the invoice?” DeSantis requested a WFLA reporter who applied the misnomer, adding that “it is why folks never believe in men and women like you simply because you peddle phony narratives.”

The governor mentioned the laws is supposed to give moms and dads insight into the classroom.

“And we are going to make positive that mom and dad are able to send their kid to kindergarten with no acquiring some of this stuff injected into their university curriculum,” he additional.
